Hi Ale,

Destroy a database => causes an abrupt exit not sure why?
(Also the button "Abanndonner" should read "Cancel" in the Destroy a database dialog")

Suggested change for Button:
"Unzip a back-up towards a database" => "Restore a database"

Cheers,
John

"Destroy a database => causes an abrupt exit not sure why?"
Does that always happen, or only in some circumstances?
Do you see the Warning window before the exit takes place?
Do you hear the sound (Dog barking)?
I suspect that this sound can make problems on some computers. Evil or Very Mad

Right! I will modify that.

Sorry I've tried to recreate the circumstances of the Abrupt exit. I can only add that I did see a debug box ,titled "Roll your own genealogy" flash by quickly but thats about it!

Also noticed that for the "Look for doubles and errors" Screen it will also abruptly exit in the middle of a search.

When using "Backup the currently openned database" the second time a window comes up called "Avertissement" (should be renamed "Warning") and the "abandonner" button renamed "Cancel" if you press the "x" it goes ahead and backs up anyway instead of just acting like cancel.
Maybe it would be easier to use a save-as box here to allow for multiple backups?

Cheers I will keep looking,
John

"Destroy a database"
This is strange : Nothing in the program has a label like "Roll your own genealogy"
I still have my questions :
Does that always happen, or only in some circumstances?
Do you see the Warning window before the exit takes place?
Do you hear the sound (Dog barking)?

"Look for doubles and errors"
No sounds are used in this one.
Does that always happen, or only for some specific search, or erraticly?

"Backup the currently openned database"
You are right, because users are supposed to use the Cancel button.
I will add also the warning for the X button.

"allow for multiple backups"
Yes, good idea.

Sorry I do not know I can not pin it down to any one thing so far!

Yes very quickly, as I mentioned..

Do you hear the sound (Dog barking)?

I heard no sound when this happened.

I will update you if I find out anything more.

Hi Ale,
I sent the following to you because it had a file attached
Please message me if you did not receive it.
----------------------------------------------------------------
SmartGenealogy 2.1 - Error message after abrubt exit..

Hello Ale,

Managed to capture the error.(See attached files.)

Here are some of what I had just been doing
-Using the filter on the pedigree screen
-Used the events screen
-Used the SEEK Persons

I heard no noise :(
I will keep you updated but I believe I can add nothing further to this
report.
---------------------------------
A couple of Suggestions:
1.Consider combining the two SEEK screens (Persons and Events) and use a check
box to choose, this would make it simpler. Also Just rename the combined SEEK
pages as "Find". And move the tab to after the Repositories as it is a tool or
add it as a button to the menu giving it the magnifing glass as it button and
choosing a new button for "Look for errors and doubles" as I believed it
button to mean find?

2.On the Pedigree page the filter is great but when you have a lot of the same
surname it is very difficult to scroll the screen. Is it possible to have a
box that you could type information for the list to be filtered on either
"Given" or "Surname". The filter "Surname" would show anyone that has the
first partial letters you type in and if you enter a space or "," comma and
more letters it would show the same thing but start filtering on the second
field "Given".
eg:
A/B/C/....Z
---------------------------
|gio,re | <--New 2 field filter box.
---------------------------
giovanni, rembrant | <--Results
giovanna, reproe |
giobattista, reason |
giorno,regpe |
---------------------------

3. Have only (1)"Print" Button eg:move all "Print" Buttons to the Menu. Have
preview as standard.

4. Move all "Modify/Delete/Create" Buttons from the bottom of the screens to
the top of the screens. This makes it easier to use the program.

5.On the "Families" tab you have a "Clean Unused family numbers" please
provide a warning of what it will do before actually doing it if started. Make
people confirm that they want to remove unused family numbers. Or at least
provide a way of canceling once in progress.

Or have a single "Tools" tab that groups rarely used options like
-"Clean Unused family numbers"
-"Skin"
-"Look for errors and doubles"
-------------------------------------------------

Are their any keyboard shortcuts in SmartGenealogy?

Regards,
John

Thank you for the detailed informations about the error.
I assume that it concern the error when using "Destroy a database" (and not the error when "Looking for doubles and errors")
The problem occurs when using Winmm.dll, which is the dynamic library for Multimedia : This therefore confirm that this is produced when trying to play a sound. I will suppress this sound in the next release.

Now, about "Looking for doubles and errors", it must be something else, because, no sounds are used there.
On the "Tools to analyse coherence" page, there are a total of 8 "GO" buttons :
- Does the error occur when using ANY of those buttons, or only when using SOME (or ONE) of those buttons ?
- Does the program always stop at the same position of the progress-bar (which would indicate that the problem is in the data themself) ?

I will study your suggestions in details when i have more time available; only some comments for now :
- (2) Pedigree filter : Considering your example, you can exactly get this result today using the "Seek person" tab, and typing "Gio%" in the Given box, plus "Re%" in the Surname box.
- (5) I fully agree with you that i must add a Cancel button to the "Clean unused familiy numbers" function, since it can be a long process on a large database.
- Shortcuts : No, today there are no shortcuts used, but i can add one or two : What would you suggest ?

Hello John

Thank you for the detailed informations about the error.

Yes

The problem occur when using Winmm.dll, which is the dynamic library for Multimedia : This therefore confirm that this is produced when trying to play a sound.

I will try and narrow down when errors occur in "Looking for doubles and errors" and "Tools to analyse coherence" and report back.

- Does the program always stop at the same position of the progress-bar (which would indicate that the problem is in the data themself) ?

Not sure if it is related to one of the 8 buttons, but the there is no way of seeing the progress bar because by then the program has closed, I will keep an eye on it. I don't believe it is the gedcom data because I have had the same results with my data and other peoples data as well a with gedcoms created by SmartGenealogy.

I will study your suggestions in details when i have more time available; only some comments for now :
- (2) Pedigree filter : Considering your example, you can exactly get this result today using the "Seek person" tab, and typing "Gio%" in the Given box, plus "Re%" in the Surname box.

I agree that you can, but the purpose of my suggestion is to make it easier to search within a large group of people with the same surname from the pedigree page, because at the moment it is very difficult with the "push button filter" on the pedigree page.

Or maybe the the pedigree page should not have the "push button filter" and "given and surname list" and they should actually be part of the combined "Seek/Find" pages.

With extra space on the Pedigree page you could display one more genearation of ancestors and the siblings of the dispayed person.

- (5) I fully agree with you that i must add a Cancel button to the "Clean unused familiy numbers" function, since it can be a long process on a large database.
- Shortcuts : No, today there are no shortcuts used, but i can add one or two : What would you suggest ?

All the best
Alain

For SmartGenealogy I suggest Keyboard shortcut's be created for each of the Menu Buttons and Page Tabs, and frequently used commands for data entry eg:add a person

The firsts keyboard shortcuts to be made should be for the combined "Seek/Find" page using "Control+F"

Thankyou for considering my suggestions,
John
